In a recent tweet, the UFC’s outspoken number one welterweight contender Josh Koscheck insulted Canadian sports icon Georges St. Pierre and the francophone community by referring to GSP as a “frenchy.”
The full tweet stated: “Aug 2 ill be back to work!! Time to clear the mind & focus on me & myself & I. We got a frenchy's ass to kick.”
Many in the francophone community find the term “frenchy” to be derogatory and insulting. Unfortunately, this is not new territory for St. Pierre and one of his opponents. Before his rematch with Matt Serra at UFC 83 in Montreal, Serra said in a radio interview, “Drink your red wine, go to your hockey game and shut up,” and also called him “frenchy.” St. Pierre took this to heart and it motivated him to put a beating on Serra, something he fulfilled on route to regaining his 170lb title. St. Pierre has looked unbeatable since then.
If Koscheck’s insult results in some added motivation for St. Pierre, then ‘Kos’ may regret ever having used twitter. As fans have seen in the past, an in shape, focused, motivated GSP is arguably the best pound-for-pound mixed martial artist on the planet.
Still, Koscheck will do what he can to get inside St. Pierre’s head and won’t make any attempt win over fans in Quebec, or across Canada for that matter. After his victory over Paul Daley at UFC 113 in Montreal, Koscheck said he’d beat St. Pierre and even said he wanted to see the Montreal Canadiens lose. To say the least, this didn’t go over too well with the Montreal crowd.
The two welterweight combatants recently finished filming Season 12 of The Ultimate Fighter where they were the head coaches. The first time they fought, St. Pierre won a unanimous decision at UFC 74. Right now, they are tentatively scheduled to headline UFC 124 on December 11.
