UFC 124 recap: Georges St. Pierre defends his title, Bocek submits Hazelett

By MIKE JOHNSTON
Canada is home to the best mixed martial artist and one of the best athletes in the world, as Georges St.Pierre defeated Josh Koscheck by unanimous decision in yet another dominating performance. The audience of over 23,000 at the Bell Centre in Montreal was deafening as the UFC 124 crowd was arguably the best ever in UFC history.
In the first round of the Welterweight Championship bout, GSP established his jab and showed his superiority and precision on the feet. However, Koscheck stuffed several of GSP’s takedown attempts and landed a takedown of his own at the end of the round. Koscheck’s eye was very swollen by the end of the round because of GSP’s stiff jab he utilized throughout the fight. The second round was a pure standup round that saw GSP land more strikes and Koscheck land one big uppercut. The third round saw GSP press Koscheck against the cage in an effort to fatigue him, as well as some more precision punching from St. Pierre. The fourth and fifth rounds saw more of the same as Georges St. Pierre has cemented himself as the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet.
Before the pay-per-view started, fans watching live on ufc.com witnessed Ontario native Mark Bocek submit Dustin Hazelett with a slick triangle choke in the first round of their lightweight bout. After the fight, Bocek said that he has the best jiu-jitsu in the lightweight division and said that he would like to fight George Sotiropoulos at UFC 131 in Toronto.
Also on ufc.com, Winnipeg’s Joe Doerksen and Dan Miller battled in a technical ground fight that went the distance. Miller ended up winning a split decision by staying in top position for the majority of the 15 minutes. In the second round Doerksen nearly finished the fight with a kimura, however Miller escaped and landed ground-and-pound. By the end of the fight both men were bloody, but the difference ended up being Miller’s ability to take the Canadian to the mat. The loss was Doerksen’s second straight in the UFC.
In preliminary action Ontario’s Sean Pierson and TUF 7 alumnus Matt Riddle thrilled the crowd with a back-and-forth battle that went the distance. Pierson won a unanimous decision by using more precise striking to counter Riddle’s aggression in one of the more exciting fights of 2010.
In the co-main event, Stefan Struve lived up to his unofficial nickname “the comeback kid” as he defeated Sean McCorkle by TKO in the first round after nearly being submitted with a kimura. Struve, who fights like a 7-foot tall Diaz brother, is now 5-2 in the UFC and one of the top prospects in heavyweight division.
On the main card, Thiago Alves looked better than ever in a unanimous decision win over John Howard. Alves’ standup was crisp and powerful; he looked to be in tremendous shape and showed why he is still one of the best welterweights in the world. Also, Jim Miller put a halt to all the hype surrounding Charles Oliveira with a first round submission win over the young Brazilian. Miller, who has only lost to Gray Maynard and Frankie Edgar in his career, is now without question in title contention in the lightweight division. And, former Ultimate Fighter winner Mac Danzig knocked out fellow TUF champ, Joe Stevenson in round one of their lightweight scrap.
