UFC 113: Shogun KO's Machida, Daley sucker-punches Koscheck and is cut from UFC, Kimbo also released

Mauricio "Shogun" Rua defeated Lyoto Machida to become the new UFC Light Heavyweight Champion.

UFC 113 has come and gone and it was an exciting night of mixed martial arts that saw a new champion crowned, a sucker punch thrown in the co-main event, and Canadian fighters going a disappointing 1-6.

In the main event, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua knocked out Lyoto Machida in the first round to become the new UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. Shogun and Machida exchanged several combinations early and Machida took Rua down on two occasions. However, Shogun eventually landed a solid overhand right that dropped Machida and after a few more punches, Machida was out cold. It was the most impressive performance of the new champion’s career and the first time anyone has been able to finish Machida. Shogun will likely defend his title for the first time against the winner of the Rampage Jackson vs. Rashad Evans fight at UFC 114 later this month.

In the co-main event, Josh Koscheck defeated Paul Daley by unanimous decision and with the win earned a title shot against Georges St. Pierre. The win, though, is not what people are talking about. Koscheck outwrestled Daley for three relatively lackluster rounds and when the fight was over, Daley sucker-punched Koscheck. Referee Dan Miragliotta restrained Daley and Koscheck was unharmed. At the post-fight press conference, Dana White said that Daley had been cut by the organization and “will never fight in the UFC again.”

Canadians went a disappointing 1-6 on the night. Sam Stout won yet another “Fight of the Night” award in a spit-decision loss to Jeremy Stephens. Alan Belcher submitted Quebecer Patrick Cote in an exciting back-and-forth battle. In an unfortunate incident on the preliminary card, Jason MacDonald’s fight ended with him breaking his leg in several places. The lone Canadian to win was Joe Doerksen who came from behind to submit Tom Lawlor in an excellent two-round fight.

In other action Matt Mitrione defeated Kimbo Slice by second round TKO. Although it was a valiant effort from Slice, Dana White said at the post-fight press conference that it would be Kimbo’s last fight in the UFC.
