Prior to attending UFC 113 in Montreal, UFC Hall-of-Famer Randy “The Natural” Couture stopped by his gym in Toronto to conduct a hands-on a seminar for nearly 100 eager participants.
For over two hours, Couture taught his favourite grappling techniques to students who varied in age, size, shape and athletic ability. Couture answered questions and gave advice to those fortunate enough to be in attendance.
Misha Cirkunov, who trains out of Xtreme Couture Toronto and is also an instructor there, assisted Couture throughout the night. Cirkunov, 23, is an accomplished grappler and recently made the transition to MMA. With his world-class wrestling and jiu-jitsu skills, combined with a black belt in judo, Cirkunov is one of the top mixed martial arts prospects in Canada today.
Couture said he always enjoys coming to Canada and visiting his Toronto gym. “The fans are always great when we come up to Canada,” said Couture.
The five-time UFC champion also said he is confident that local fighters will be able to compete in their hometowns. “I think it’s only a matter of time before the sport’s sanctioned here in the province of Ontario,” said Couture.
"We’ve been over here with Xtreme Couture Toronto for quite a while now. We’ve got over 2000 members and [the sport] continues to grow and entrench itself here. Sooner or later, the political powers that be are going to have to cave to the constituents and legalize the sport,” Couture added.
“The Natural” also let it be known when his next fight would be. “We haven’t signed the bout agreement yet, but it looks like it’s a done deal. It looks like I’ll be fighting James Toney in Boston at UFC 118 in August,” said Couture. “We don’t know if it will be at heavyweight, a catch weight, or light heavyweight yet, but I’m fine with all three.”
