'Fight of the Year' in the making: Mark Hominick set to take on Leonard Garcia at WEC 51

By MIKE JOHNSTON
So far this year, both Leonard Garcia and Ontario native Mark Hominick have participated in “Fight of the Year” candidates. Garcia (14-5-1) narrowly defeated “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung at WEC 48 in a fight Joe Rogan called the craziest fight he’d ever seen. And, Hominick (18-8) TKO’d fellow Canuck Yves Jabouin in a Canadian classic at WEC 49 in front of a raucous home crowd.
Now it is being reported that Hominick will take on Garcia at WEC 51 later this year in what would certainly be another “Fight of the Year” candidate. The bout is scheduled to take place on the televised portion of the card. While being a certain crowd-pleaser, this matchup is also pertinent in terms of the WEC featherweight rankings. Both men are likely just a couple quality wins away from a title shot.
After his WEC 49 victory, Hominick said he believes his standup is as good as anyone’s in the 145lb division and then he respectfully called out Garcia. “Every man in this division is so tough, but there’s no one in this division that can bring to the table what I bring to the table against Jose Aldo,” said Hominick. “I think another great fight, no disrespect, no disrespect whatsoever, I think another great fight would be myself and Leonard Garcia.”
Hominick and Garcia were supposed to fight several years ago in the now-defunct TKO organization, where Hominick began his career, but it never came to fruition. Since Garcia has never been one to turn down a challenge, and since the WEC brass are such excellent matchmakers, Hominick got his wish. WEC 51 is tentatively scheduled to take place on September 30. Other rumoured matchups include a featherweight title fight between Jose Aldo and Manny Gamburyan, and George Roop vs. Chan Sung Jung.
Hominick trains at his Adrenaline Training Centre in London, Ontario with teammates and close friends Sam Stout and Chris Horodecki. Hominick also trains part-time at Xtreme Couture Toronto.
