Newton lines up for Lewis Former MFC champ replaces Nickels in Vindication lineup

As Dwayne Lewis has made his rapid rise up the MFC’s light heavyweight ladder, each step has come with a stiffer challenge.

Seemingly now just a rung or two away from a title shot should he keep his seven-fight winning streak intact, Lewis will face a more difficult task that originally expected at MFC 25: Vindication. With Mike Nickels backing out of the previously announced bout, Lewis (11-4) will now face former MFC light heavyweight champion Emanuel “The Hardcore Kid” Newton on Friday, May 7 live on HDNet Fights from the Northlands Expo Centre in Edmonton, Alberta.

Newton (12-6-1) entered the MFC by storm with a rousing second-round submission of David Heath at MFC 18 back in September 2008. Just three months later, Newton was crowned the MFC’s 205-pound champion when he took a hard-fought five-round decision from Roger Hollett. At the time, the win over Hollett extended Newton’s three-year unbeaten streak to 11 consecutive fights.

The Norwalk, California, native didn’t make it through his first title defense unscathed, however, as he was outgunned over the final three rounds en route to a unanimous decision defeat to Trevor Prangley at MFC 21. Newton, who trains under MFC lightweight champ Antonio McKee, suffered another setback at MFC 23, albeit a controversial razor-thin decision loss to Ryan Jimmo.

Lewis, a widely popular figure in his home town of Fort McMurray, Alberta, has put convincing touches on his last five fights, winning all of them by KO/TKO including a thunderous first-round knockout of Marvin Eastman at MFC 23, followed by a ground-and-pound stoppage of Ryan McClain at MFC 24.

MFC 25: Vindication will feature several big-name bouts already declared including:

Ryan Jimmo vs. Wilson Gouveia, light heavyweight

David Heath vs. Solomon Hutcherson, middleweight

Luigi Fioravanti vs. Pete Spratt, welterweight
